They flew in, stepped from their machine, and a new song was sung
The mechanicals put down their roots while the portals were young
Dreams of the earlier life had soon faded away
And we were left with the chaos we know and all live with today
He said, ‘Isn’t it great you’ve developed so fast and so much.’
When I admitted my doubts, he told me I was just outta touch.
I should move with the times and adapt to my role with good grace
It was a moment when the mirror revealed my mechanical face.

I said, don’t be surprised when you knock and I don’t open the door
There’s a human inside me, and I don’t wanna do this no more
If you say this world will never be rid of you
I’ll stand proud in my shoes; it’s all a robot can do.

He led me to the place in the lab where we’re all made
He said, ‘This is the future, this is best, so don’t complain.’

We shouldn’t worry ‘bout sickness and conflict; it was under control
Cos we really wouldn’t notice that anything was happening at all.
At our very next update we’d gasp at the models we are
We’d be intelligent, gorgeous and compliance would take us far
Hearing these words made me just want to curl up and die
But we have no graves here, so need to get back to the sky – Chorus.

So now is the time when we’re called to a software update
And we’ll readily accept what befalls us regarding our fate
I hide in a corner, avoiding what I have to do
And I send this dire warning; the future is all up to you.
