Once upon a time we had a most awesome dream And its tales were told in rhyme on how life should be We took the old laws, and washed them away Now I hear the Earth cry: ‘Did you have to do it that way?’ Lying on the ground are shards of you and me Their reflections reveal betrayal; clouding up what we see We broke every code, in the mirrors of lore And when there’s no blameless road, you don’t know what life is for With no clear reflection, we’ve nowhere to look but through splintering glass Its presence evades us, fragmenting us as we go The witch queen’s in places with so many faces; the wolf’s in you and me But now the tales have turned; we no longer can be free Once upon a time we were all in control Now we’ve shadows on our minds; how easy to lose the soul Snow White is lost, on the streets with her bags Cinders is up then down, consigned to her rags Ah - give me a reason to say we’re not living with splintering glass It greets us each season, and we don’t know which way to turn But you’re making a fuss, there’s no more to discuss; it’s just a fairytale Once upon a time, ancient stories were told They kept us well informed, they kept us whole Now all we have is splintering glass A mirror that won’t mend, from a fragmented past It’s just a fairytale

Fee fi foe fum… What kind of person am I, always trying to reach up for the sky Do I try and impress him or do I just turn around and fly What kind of person is he? Always trying to get back at me Am I so stupid that I can’t see the stalk for the beans? The giant’s here, he’s right in front of me I make myself clear, but he only laughs at me Do I make a run for it or do I face my fear The giant’s here; there’s no escaping him He twists my ear, until I’m facing him Best take what I can while his snores are all over the world. It’s hard for someone to see, that he’s oh so much bigger than me He flies me so high that the ground’s never under my feet It’s hard for a person like me, who does nothing in life except please Am I so stupid that I can’t see the world beyond his knees? Fee fi foe fum…

She will sleep for a hundred years; she will sleep for a thousand years She will sleep for a million years; she dreams life away Am I dreaming? Am I dreaming? Am I dreaming? Or am I the dream? Am I dreaming? Am I dreaming? Am I dreaming now? Am I dreaming? Am I dreaming? Am I dreaming? Or am I the dream? Will I dream for a million years? La beauté du bois endormi She will sleep for a hundred years; she will sleep for a thousand years She will sleep for a million years; she dreams life away Am I dreaming? Am I dreaming? Am I dreaming? Or am I the dream? Am I dreaming? Am I dreaming? Am I dreaming now? Am I dreaming? Am I dreaming? Am I dreaming? Or am I the dream? Will I dream for a million years? La beauté du bois endormi She will sleep for a hundred years; she will sleep for a thousand years She will sleep for a million years; she dreams life away La beauté du bois endormi

Gold is the light that looks back at me It might as well be night when all I can see is me Who would be king, just to be strangled by his crown? Who’d sacrifice everything just so he can fool around? I’m told it’s just a trick playing games with me That no one is as quick to fall for it like the fool that’s me Each blade of grass, and every single tree Echoes my past, echoes her and me I would love to fly free. I would love to be the bird that flies free I hear that prey bird call from up in the sky I look up but can only look back to my own reflected eye Who would be king, just so he can have his way? Who’d want everything, just so he can look at his reflection again and again? I would love to fly free. I would love to be the bird that flies free Cos I’m happy as a – I’m so happy as a – I don’t know what I’m happy as. There is no trap for the prey bird that’s free He who has wings will never look at his reflection again and again and again I’d give the world to fly free, but I will never fly free But I’m happy as a – I’m so happy as a – but I don’t know what I’m happy as. I don’t know what happiness is.

The Fool 06:42
My name is Jack, and I’m a fool, and fools can be good to know They give you the truth and dress it all up so insults will never show If I should make some fun of you while you’re making fun of me You won’t know what I’m doing cos you’re too fucking blind to see If I should come to visit you, my job is to tell your fate I’ve told kings of their destiny but they realise it all too late Just cross me palm with silver and I’ll work it on your behalf If you don’t see that it’s serious you can always sit back and laugh

Life is different now, as Great Uncle Bobo knows It’s all so uncool now, and in the Middleworld it shows He told me in the lower realms, mortals took it way too far When asked what made him think this way, he said, it’s just the way I are Walking on woodland paths, through the darkness of the night Walking as we always did, keeping our noses in sight Gossip on woodland paths says we’re history today Singing as he always did; this is all Bobo could say Da de doodle daa, da de doodle dee... Please, Great Uncle, teach me how I must spend my time You tell me I might as well pick my teeth, cos humans ran out of time He took me by the shoulders and said there’s nothing we can do Except to sit up in the trees and call names like we do Walking on woodland paths, through the darkness of the night Walking as we always did, keeping our noses in sight Gossip on woodland paths says we’re history today Singing as he always did; this is all Bobo could say Da de doodle daa, da de doodle dee... So he said you can’t do anything unless you can raise the dead Waking them’s just a waste of time, you might as well stay in bed. He added that humans lost the plot a very long time ago They won’t let you help them now cos there’s nothing they need to know Walking on woodland paths, through the darkness of the night Walking as we always did, keeping our noses in sight Gossip on woodland paths says we’re history today Singing as he always did; this is all Bobo could say Da de doodle daa, da de doodle dee... Bobo said be cool now. Bobo said stay cool now, cool now. Bobo said be cool now. Bobo said stay cool now, cool now, cool now.

All I recall of the old life In my mind, a most natural memory Am I prepared for the new life I hear you; oh yes I hear you Snow White, remember The way, the way Snow White, remember How to bring them all home; you’ve got to bring them all home I often believed I was falling The break in the cloud hailed the mechanical day The earth was the source of my calling So I hear you; oh yes I hear you Snow White, remember The way, the way Snow White remember, How to bring them all home; you’ve got to bring them all home She is all across the landscape She is native to the sky From the western to the eastern shores She’s clear in my eye Don’t push her away Snow White we’re with you Don’t toss her aside Please don’t let go We are her children Snow White we love you Can’t leave her alone Can’t leave her alone, can’t leave her alone Chorus x 2 It’s a mechanical day

She likes wandering in the forest to her grandma’s home How she loves this sleepy forest, even though alone Oh, she won’t be lonely one day She will find a new friend one day They say wolves and spirit creatures hide among the trees They say wolves are just like leeches but that’s just a tease Oh, she may just glimpse him one day Ask him all her questions one day Take care, he’s a big bad wolf; who’s afraid of the big bad wolf? She likes moonbeams, snowflakes, roses, rainbows, jam and cream She thinks when she stands in mushrooms she will find her dream She thinks he is lonely all day That’s why she has to find me one day Take care, he’s a big bad wolf; who’s afraid of the big bad wolf? So she wonders what I look like; how I spend my time Do I stand in morning sunbeams; that pleasure is mine Oh, I am so lonely all days; I will be her new friend one day I’ve the kindest heart, a mind that’s big and smart All the better to love her with I’m warm like the sun, the moon and I are one All the better to hug her with I’ve the biggest smile, I do it all in style All the better to worship her with I’m the best she’ll find, a treasure warm and kind All the better to kiss her with

Rapping Elf 04:00
Walk this way, I need a tasty treat, something savoury, something sweet If you see me rubbing my hands with delight, it’s because I’ve been awake and hungry all night, good to meet ya, wanna eat ya. Visit my den, just here in the wood, you’ll like my cooking it’ll make you feel good Gravy’s good and ice cream’s nice, you might go well with potatoes and rice Good to meet ya, wanna eat ya Eating you will make me feel so good that I can float away until I fly up high into the stars I’m no mean witch, just a little old elf, if I offer to eat you I’m in good health We elves now and then need a bit of a bite, we elves have a ravenous appetite Good to meet ya, wanna eat ya. All the witches in all the world will never cook like we do No one else in the whole wide world can do what elves need to do All the humans in all the world, can never take just a bite We’re alone in the whole wide world for elves are not impolite Eating you will make me feel so good that I can float away until I fly up high into the stars Good to meet ya, wanna eat ya We all get hiccups if we eat too fast, a tasty meal never seems to last I love you so much I will never eat slow, you taste too good you’ll be pleased to know Good to meet ya, wanna eat ya. Eating something nice transcends us to the stars Echo the stars.

Here they come, all her yesterdays Marching by; they’re with her, come what may Here she stays, on her own again A queen for just a night There’s a shoe on the stairs and it’s in his hand He will wonder where she has flown to There were stars in her eyes as they danced all night Now he’s on his own again There she runs, back to her other days All her tears, go with her, come what may There they are, both on their own again He had a queen for just a night Wonder and glamour will fill her eyes Romance bowling her off her feet Will he find her, it’s hard to know He must keep on searching Can she see him, he can’t see her She’ll do nothing but run away Will he find her, it’s hard to know He must keep on searching He must keep on searching; he must keep on searching She is timeless to him, and he can’t get her out of his mind. The shoe will find her for him, cos he can’t get her out of his mind.

Elven Ball 04:53
I’ll tell you of a place where woodland creatures spend their time They gather for a folk dance when the solstice bells do chime If you wish to witness them you’ll need to take a fall Down below the oak is where you’ll see the elven ball They come with gold and with silver, come with flowers in their hair Bowing low, pacing the quadrille: it’s a grand affair Some are tall, some are shorter, some are dark, some are fair All you’ll hear is their chanting: the ball the ball the ball, the ball the ball the ball. Here you’ll see the giants waltzing; they’ll be twice your size There you’ll see a small djinn jigging, romance in her eyes You will need to watch and listen, say nothing at all Then you’ll be delivered of what is called the elven ball You can bring honest intentions; you can have love in your eyes But you won’t know what’s awaiting: the strangest spell of all It will be so enchanting; you’ll find no means of escape All you’ll hear is their chanting: the ball the ball the ball, the ball the ball the ball. So please heed my warning; you must hear me when I say Elven folk, they don’t take prisoners, you are there to stay We bid goodbye to the old life just before we fall I used to be a free soul till I joined the elven ball

about

Not so much for little children, the psychology behind old folktales is something we overlook today. Once, earlier tales and myths guided us in life and gave us advice on how to live, with warnings of what could befall us if we ignored the psychological tools they were providing for us.

Classic fairy tales tell their stories within these songs and give reasons for their existence in our communities, such as Jack and the Beanstallk (Jack and the Giant): a play on a boy trying to please his father and how his father's dominance is always a problem. Also Red Riding Hood (A Song for Red), how she is likely to have her heart captured by a narcissistic individual who waits to woo her with his charms. The Elven Ball, presenting the idea that Lowerworld creatures are not always so cute and nice and can capture humans souls if they do not heed the warnings they are given about living in a balanced way. And finally, the title track, Fairytale (Splintering Glass), a look at how we have become fragmented people in these modern times, drawing off the great folklore symbolism pertaining to mirrors.

The loss of the education we can find within the old Fairytale is a sad
one. Here, the essence of their meanings are recaptured once again.

about

Patrick Jasper Lee Wales, UK

I am something of an activist with my music & literature. As an indigenous Rom Gypsy my cultural and artistic work explores the highs and lows of life/soul. I champion tribal origins, and the underdog in our modern times. I am tired of what this society tends to throw at us, especially innocent folk. I believe the awesome beauty of nature & the arts remains our only hope in this chaotic world. ... more
